Nitric acid takes yellowish brown colour due to the presence of dissolved nitrogen dioxide. Nitric acid slowly decomposes even at room temperature, specially in the presence of sunlight. Liberated nitrogen dioxide dissolves in the acid and gives a yellow colour.
