Concentrated H2SO4 is diluted by adding drop by drop water.

If we perform the above in the laboratory, it shows some observations and they are:

  • If we dilute concentrated  H2SO4 by adding drop by drop water, it causes a  severe exothermic reaction which results in an explosion in the laboratory.
  • The explosion may cause injuries and that can be severe also so avoid performing the above task in the laboratory.
  • If we add concentrated H2SO4 drop by drop to water, it will produce a slow exothermic reaction but that will not be destructive.
