Roots take up minerals from soil by active transport where the minerals are taken up by root hairs against the concentration gradient i.e. movement of minerals from a lower concentration gradient to a higher concentration gradient. The process of active transport requires energy. Energy is provided by respiration which occurs in mitochondria present in the root hairs.
