Concept of a city:

The first 'cities' that first appeared along river valleys such as Ur, Nippur and Mohenjodaro, were larger in scale than other human settlements. They could only develop when an increase in food supplies made it possible to support a wide range of non-food producers. They were called cities because they were centers of political power, administrative network, trade and industry, religious institutions, and intellectual activity, and supported various social groups such as artisans, merchants and priests.

Cities can be modern-day metropolises(which are large, densely populated cities of a country or state, often the capital of the region.) or they can be smaller urban centers with limited functions.

Growth and nature of metropolitan cities in India:

There are 4 mega metropolises in India: Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai. Since I believe you are talking about the 10th grade portions, I will be only talking about Bombay(Mumbai). The rest cities developed more or less the same way as Bombay.

Bombay was a group of 7 islands, which was given as dowry by Princess Catherine of Braganza to King Charles II. It became an important administrative center, major industrial center, and a major port. Cotton mills began to arise here, with the first established in 1854. Chawls were established and they were used to house the people. While a Londoner enjoyed a space of 155 sq yards in tenements, a person in Bombay would only get 9.5 sq yards. While an average of 8 people lived in tenements, as much as 20 people used to live in one Chawl.  While London developed due to fear of social disorder, Bombay developed due to fear of epidemics.

Many reclamation projects too took place. They were:

1. The Bombay governor William Hornby approved the building of the great sea wall which prevented the flooding of the low lying areas of Bombay.

2. In 1864, the Back Bay Reclamation company reclaimed the western foreshore from tip of Malabar Hill to end of the Colaba. Reclamation often meant leveling of hills.

3. Another project was undertaken by Bombay Port Trust, which built a dry dock and used the excavated earth to create the 22-acre Ballard estate, and consequently, the Marine Drive was developed.

Films too came up, and provided employment to people and an entertainment too.

Other cities developed more or less the same. If I were to write about other cities, then it would be too long.

Thank you.

Concept of city and growth of metropolitan cities in India:

  • We can define the city as a perpetual and closely settled place with governmentally distinct boundaries whose members work mainly on non-agricultural tasks.
  • In India, the urban system chiefly is rotated around 4 chief metro areas, of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai.
  • Hyderabad is considered as a best metropolitan city because of an arrangement of factors like greater infrastructure comprising road, power, traffic, metro, safety, good quality of education, easily obtainable talent pool, and ease of doing business.

Hope it helped...
