force is that external cause which tends to change the state of motion or the state of rest of an object....

an object, if once set in motion, moves with unoform velocity if no force acts on it. thus a body continues to be in the state of rest or in rhe state of uniform motion unless an external force is applied on it. this is called the galileo's law of inertia
