This article will examine educational ideals by exploring the relationbetween the individual, the collective, and humanity in Kaplan’s  Jewish and educational philosophy. Generally the goals of individ-ualism, nationalism, and universalism are seen as mutually exclusive. By contrast, Kaplan argues for the symbiotic relationshipbetween individualistic, nationalistic, and universalistic values, which forms the foundation of his understanding of the goals of  Jewish education. Kaplan argues that Jewish education can (and must) simultaneously assist the self-actuofindividual  Jews, create group loyalty among them and promote the advancement of humanity as a whole.

Perhaps more than any modern Jewish thinker, Mordecai M. Kaplan wasdeeply and innovatively involved in Jewish education (see Ackerman, 1981;Cutter, 1990). He was a master teacher who trained generations of rabbinicstudents of the Jewish Theological Seminary in the art of preaching andswayed scores of Jewish educators in his classes at the Teachers Institute. AsMelt Scult (2001), his preeminent biographer, remarks, “Kaplan’s contributionto Jewish education is immense. He was responsible for bringing into thefield many people who later became the central pillars of American Jewisheducation” .

Kaplan also lent his visionary and administrative talent to variouseducational initiatives. He served as Dean of the Teacher’s Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary for over 30 years (Scult, 1986, pp. 57–84, 1993,pp. 111–116). In 1910, he conducted the first systematic survey of the state of  Jewish education in NewYork with Bernard Cronson and the report’s princi-pal suggestion that Jewish education become a responsibility of the commu-nity was implemented with the establishment of the Bureau of JewishEducation
