Concept of supplementary value of protein:

  • Proteins are the building blocks of muscles, skin, etc.,
  • It is the polymer which has aminoacids as its major constituents.
  • The food items that we take differ in the nutritive value of protein.
  • One food may lack one of the essential amino acids, while other food item may has that amino acid.
  • When we take these food items together, we will the complete protein supplement.
  • For example, the vegetarians can get all the essential aminoacids without taking animal foods.
  • One more example is cereals lack/have limited amino acid lysine. Pulses lack or limited aminoacid  methionine. When we take rice (cereal) and dal (pulse) we get both the aminoacids.
