why does gravity always acts downward and not upward

No gravity is acting both upward and downward btwn us and the earth but eatrhs mass is toooooo big in comparison to our mass so the gravitational force btwb us and the earth is felt only by our bodies bcause

acceleration is force by mass so if u put mass of earth in that acceleration experieced by earth will be negligible but when u put our mass there will be some acc. for our mass. so thats it!!
