Trash is a perfect example of globalization. Something local has become a global commodity. And the more trash a country produces, the more global it becomes. Rich countries have the money to dispose their waste in the easiest fashion without having to deal with the problems that can arise from recycling. Developing nations really can use second hand products (e.g. computers or mobile phones) and the materials that can be won through recycling. Recycling saves raw materials developing countries are in need of to push their economies. But their lacking health and environmental regulations, which make the countries so attractive for dumping trash, make the recycling process so dangerous for the people and their environment. The immediate gain overshadows any long-term impacts.

Developed nations would have the know-how to recycle in a responsible way. They need to feel responsible for what happens to their trash once it crosses international borders. In a globalized world, people should also be able to think on a global scale and not be solely interested in their personal gains. Sadly, profit always plays a role in today’s world. As long as shipping trash thousands of kilometers is still cheaper than recycling on site, neither environment nor health concerns will provide enough incentive for big companies to change their approach.
