Robert Clive suffered from a painful stomach disease or condition he contracted in India, a tropical climate. Only 25% of the British troops who fought with Clive in India survived the battles, tropical diseases and sea voyages. Back in England, he had bouts of depression, especially later in life when he had already made a huge fortune, was in failing health and had become addicted to opium. The British aristocracy never accepted Clive, he made numerous enemies when rooting out corruption in India, and many were envious of Clive’s wealth and ostentation. Clive was brought up on serious charges in Parliament, which he beat. The English crown and nation never gave Clive sufficient credit for his stupendous military and diplomatic achievements, nor for his efforts to stamp out corruption following his return to India. His physician told him to stop taking opium, but he did not or could not. There is more to life than riches, fame and glory. Robert Clive thrived on challenges, action and adventure, while retirement was tough on him.
