Explanation:
Tropical cyclones are the most destructive calamity of Indian coastal area. A detailed study of tropical cyclones has been done by the author to help the risk
assessment for long term mitigation measures. Different statistical techniques are
used for this study. The conclusions obtained from this study are discussed below.
In the chapter of “Identification ofstatistical distributions to view the occurrence
oftropical cyclones and severe tropical cyclones”, it is concluded that the Poisson
distribution can be used as a predictive model to the frequency distribution of
occurrence oftropical cyclones over different segments ofBay ofBengal. Further
study in this chapter shows that both the distributions i.e., Binomial and Poisson
are effective to predict the occurrence ofsevere tropical cyclones over the coastal
regions ofBay ofBengal.
Since, Poisson distribution can be used as a statistical predictive model for
forecasting the occurrence ofsevere tropical cyclones over the said water bodies
thus; Poisson is used to check the degree of vulnerability of severe cyclones in
different months. The conclusions drawn from the chapter “Monthly frequency
distribution of severe tropical cyclones—A statistical approach” is that May in
the pre-monsoon season and October and November
