In the United States there are currently over 2000 endangered species. That is only the United States. World Wide the numbers are staggering. To quote the statistics would only be arbitrary because more are being added daily.
Why should we care? Let's look at it this way. The Earth functions like an incredible machine. Biodiversity is the many parts of the machine working together. Plants and animals make up the individual parts. When one part is damaged or removed completely the machine can no longer function. Where will we be when the Earth no longer works?
