As others have mentioned, it is better to call India a growing power or big power in the making. Our economy, particularly our per capita income along with our HDI have to grow significantly.

Is the British rule the reason for India to become a potential big power today? Britain ruled so many countries in the world. Which of them is a potential big power? The USA became a superpower in the 20th century, even bigger than Britain

According to me, our country, what its today is definitely due to the efforts of our countrymen only. Due to wast population and lack of interest(of govt), often our govt is unable to provide resources to the deserving candidates and they have to leave our country, otherwise our country would have developed much faster.

A major chunk of doctors, engineers and scientists serving across the world are form our country, because they couldn't get here what they deserved.

Various countries got independence around the same time, and Pakistan took at the same day and none of those countries stand anywhere closer to ours.

The Britisher's only impact on our society visible till today is the acceptance of English language, which practically has eased keeping all the different lingual population with one string.
