Ralph the rover, a wicked sailor cut the bell on the inchcape rock to spite the good clergyman the Abbot of Aberbrothok. the bell was installed to warn the sailors of the dangerous inchcape rock.

But when he returned from his voyages after some days Ralph the rover found that the weather was bad and he could not place where the Inchcape rock is. At last his ship collided with the dangerous rock and while drowning he thought that that he heard the Inchcape bell. He felt that the devil was ringing his knell with the bell.

So Ralph the rover fell into the trap he himself had created and perished. The poem proves that malevolence earns terrible consequences.
