INTRODUCTION

Federal legislation becomes law after it has been considered by the members of both Houses of Parliament, who must give their consent to any measure proposed by the government (or, in certain cases, by individual MPs). The purpose of this paper is to define the main components of Canada’s legislative system. It will focus particularly on the role of parliamentarians in the process leading to passage of bills by the House of Commons and the Senate.
