Rajendra Chola ruled from 1016 to 1044. He was the son of Rajaraja Chola. He increased the power of the Chola empire. He defeated the Cheras and the Chalukyas. He assumed the title of 'Gangaikondachola' which means a person who has conquered the areas up to the River Ganga, after defeating the Palas of Bengal. He built a new capital near Tanjore and named it Gangaikondacholapuram.

He sent a fleet and defeated the Sri Vijaya king who controlled the Straits of Molucca. This helped to increase trade with South-east Asia and southern China because the Indian ships and merchants could now sail in this region. In this way, the Chola empire prospered under his rule.
