A theme of longing for freedom and an adventurous ocean is developed. We can see this hope easily in the poem " I must go down to the seas again". And the title "Sea Fever" shows the speaker really looking for adventurous and free life. It cans references to the freedom of a sea gull and a whale ((line 10). The speaker use imagery to compare life to a sea voyage and portray a strong hope for the sea. There have much imagery throughout the poem. For example, images of a "gray mist" and "a gray dawn breaking" bring the poem to life by appealing to the senses. The words such as " whetted" and "flung" help reader to create a picture of the sea. And also "wild call" and " clear call that may not be denied" describe a hope that is shared between the speaker and the ocean. Finally, images of "lonely sea' and " vagrants gypsy life" bring a freedom. As a result, John creates an image of powerful ocean to make reader more understand why the speaker must return to the sea.
