The Europeans like the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French came to India as traders in the 17th and 18th century which ended in the British occupation of India.

The Europeans firstly began to demand trade concessions like Dustak (tax free trade) from the Mughals. Later when the Mughal power weakened, the Europeans began to fortify their trade centers. Later they began to fight themselves and British succeeded in ousting them out from India.

Later British interfered in the affairs of Bengal and other states. When the Nawab of Bengal questioned the misuse of Dastak by the British, the British turned against him and defeated him in the battle of Plassey in 1757 and laid the foundation of British power in Bengal. Later the British again defeated the new Nawab of Bengal in the battle of Buxar in 1764 and laid the foundation of British power in India.
