India on the eve of Babur's invasion was divided into many small kingdoms, that fought against each other. For instance, the northern part of India was divided among Delhi, Punjab, Jaunpur, Bengal, Gujrat, Malwa, Mewar, Sindh, Orissa, Khandesh and Kashmir. Moreover to this, there was no central authority that could fight unitedly against a foreign invasion.
