Cottage industry is seen to grow and flourish mostly in the semi-urban and rural areas. For the economic upliftment of the population that had no other means of earning, the Government at the Centre and in the States encouraged the growth of cottage industry. With a low capital base, basic knowledge and craftsmanship, the people were capable of eking out a living. The activities range from making toys, artefacts, decorative items, utility items etc. and are made across India. Sometimes Government agencies render assistance in sourcing working capital and marketing the end product through agencies like KVIC.
In such a diverse country as India, cottage industry has collectively been a tremendous success in alleviating a big part of our population from abysmal poverty and suffering.
