◇The origin of Christianity in India has been the subject of controversy
among historians owing to the absence of documentary evidence. The origin of
Christianity in South India is connected with three flourishing seaports of
Cranganore and Goa on the west coast, and Tranquebar on the east. The
Christians of South India, l<nown as the Syrian Christians, claim an apostolic
foundation for their Church. Tradition traces the coming of St.Thomas (Mar
Thoma), one of the apostles of Jesus Christ landed near Cranganore (which was
at that time an important sea-port on the Malabar Coast), in 52 A.D.
The earliest historical evidence regarding the existence of a Church in
South India dates from the sixth century A.D. From the sixth to the sixteenth
century, little is knovwn of the Syrian Church beyond what is contained in
inscriptions or accounts of visitors from the west. With the arrival of Vasco da
Gama in Calicut on 14 May 1498, the history of the Syrian Church enters a new
phase in which missionaries followed the traders in South India.
