We are not a economically powerful country because of British rule but inspite of the oppressive British rule.

Yes, we might not have been the same country if Britishers had not ruled us but we would definitely have been a better country. The economic growth rate during British rule was close to 0% and famines were very frequent. Had India been not colonized we would have enjoyed a much better standard of living on average.

The proposition that the social reforms would not have happened had it not been for the British holds some merit. However, there are many countries like Japan which made a lot of progress independently. Being ruled in not the only way to get good ideas. In past a lot of ideas have been passed through trade. India being a large trading country, we could have improved our society even without the British rule.
