During the British Period, the development of tea plantation was on the upper side.  It started declining after Independence because of various reasons.  The payment of wages was less and the whole family was made to work.  Water resources were less; inefficiency of the Indian Management.  They didn’t know how to utiltise the land, how to mobilize the laborers etc.

The laborers who worked in the tea plantation where given the title of Socially Backward classes and in order to uplift them, the government started implementing rules in order to uplift them with regard to education, work etc.

The farmers in india are not getting much benefits from tea plantation this is mainly because the wages of the labor are not much attractive. Major tea plantation states include  Assam , Tamil Nadu, West Bengal etc. Nilgiri is one of the finest tea producing area. But the economic problems prevails among the families related to tea plantation business. This is also due to lack of education and access to modern method of plantation. This make unable the farmers to utilize their land properly and get the better yield. Although india is one of the largest tea producing country but the farmers are facing economic and educational problems.
