Helen's condition before the arrival of miss Sullivan was really unfortunate . Helen fell ill at the age of 19 months which left her totally blind . At first she didn't face much trouble as she used to communicate by signs . However when these signs became inadequate for communication it filled her with despair , fits of anger and frustration . 
However the arrival of her teacher Ms Sullivan and her teaching skills boosted her confidence .

Helen became extremely sick, in month of February, a sickness that was to impact rest of her life. It was called acute congestion of stomach and brain. She remembered how each day of her life was becoming dimmer and darker. Initially she was angry and frustrated but later she got used to the silence and darkness that surrounded her. She remembered world, green fields, a bright sky, trees and flowers, joys she had enjoyed in initial ninteen months.
