Air means oxygen. Oxygen is a supporter of combustion.
Experiment:
Take a candle of less height. Cover it with a inverted glass or container so that no air (oxygen) enters the container. After few second when all the air (oxygen) already present inside the glass is consumed, then there is deficiency of oxygen and hence the flame of candle extinguishes.
This shows that air (oxygen) is necessary for burning.

\rm\blue{Testing \:  the \: necessity\: of \:air \: for \: burning:}

Take a burning candle and put it on the table.Then take a glass and keep over it.The candle continues to burn sometime after the flame goes off.Remove the glass and again light the candle.Put the glass back.When the candle flame begins to flicker,remove the tumbler.We always find that the glass tumbler over the candle off the supply of air from outside.It has only some.Then it goes off.If we keep it without glass then it will be burning because it has lot of air(oxygen).This is a experiment which proves your Question

This says about that the experiment proves that air is needed to burn a material or an object,substance.
