Answer:

Aim:-To measure the speed of diffusion of two gases.

Materials required:-Glass tube with scale, Ammonium solution (NH3), Hydrochloric acid(HCI), pieces of cotton and rubber Corks.

Procedure:-

  1. Take 1 metre long narrow glass tube.
  2. Take two pieces of cotton wool.
  3. Soak one piece of cotton wool in HCI solution.
  4. Soak another piece of cotton wool in in NH3 solution.
  5. Put them separately at the two ends of the tube and observe.
  6. The HCI gives off hydrogen chloride gas and ammonium solution gives of ammonium gas.
  7. Both gases react together to form a white substance call ammonium chloride.
  8. Measure the distance of white precipitate from two ends of the glass tube.

Observation:-We can observe the ammonium gas travelled faster. So the distance of white precipitate is more from ammonia end then hydrochloric acid end.
