Newton's first law states that every object remains in state of rest or in motion until or unless it is complied to change its position by applying force.
This law is also known as law of inertia.

This can be understood by the example of a tree.

Suppose there is a tree with many leaves on it. When you will shake its branch, the branch will come into motion but leaves will still remain at rest due to inertia of rest. Hence they will fall down.

The branch was at rest before you applied force and compiled it to change its state and come into motion.
