Congo basin is also known as heart of darkness. why?

Boats tend to be constantly in motion, even if it's just a rocking motion. This is because water, especially in big bodies of water like rivers, have currents that keep them moving all the time.

Because of this, when rivers appear in literature, they often symbolize, or represent, movement. This is true for the Congo River in Heart of Darkness. The Congo symbolizes movement, and helps the characters and the plot keep going forward. In this novel, the river has other functions as well.
