Literacy is a power tool, because it enables individuals to read and understand information and apply it to their own lives. It helps them in judging the pros and cons of a given situation, which in turn helps them take informed and well thought out decisions. This works well for decisions that are purely for the individual as well as decisions that have a wider effect.

Literacy enables people to take the most suitable individualistic decisions, like helping them decide what course of study to pursue to eventually build a career in a specific profession. It involves seeking information, through newspapers and online announcements, and taking action accordingly.

Additionally, at the societal level, literacy helps citizens connect with their area representatives, enlist problems, brainstorm ideas and explore possible solutions. Literacy equips people with the analytical skills to deal with everyday problems through logical thinking. It gives them the power to improve the general living conditions. All campaigns, including the campaign launched by young environmentalist Greta Thunberg and the fight against Covid-19 are fueled by information literacy and knowledge.

Similarly, on a national level, literacy helps the common man understand the different perspectives put forth by the media about various political parties, their philosophy, their leaders and their track record. It enables him to reach a conclusion, understand the importance of each single vote and vote responsibly.

Needless to say, only when there is access to information and appropriate literacy levels to process that information, that one has the knowledge and power to mould one's own life as well as the future of the nation. This is especially true in a democracy. Hence literacy is the key to knowledge, which in itself is empowering.
