(The link between Aatmanirbhar Bharat, water conservation and going green)
The key to Aatmanirbhar Bharat or self-reliant India lies in sustainable development, which in turn depends on saving natural resources, especially water and promoting an environment friendly lifestyle. In other words, conservation of the precious blue (water) is very crucial for a nation like India, whose economy is agriculture based. These agricultural practices also need to be sustainable.
Since agriculture heavily relies on water, it is essential to save water. Despite there being a water cycle in nature, there is no guarantee of getting rainfall as and when needed. In fact, changes in climatic patterns have made rainfall even more unpredictable, leaving farmers to the mercy of the weather. If we conserve water effectively, the same saved water can be used for irrigation during the times of drought. Thus water conservation also helps save our agricultural lands and farmers and ensures sufficient food for the rest of the nation. Having enough food is also an indicator of self-reliance.
Additionally, if the wastage of water is checked, lesser water will be drawn out from the ground. Thus, the groundwater levels will not drop drastically. This will also ensure that there is enough water in the aquifers for the cultivated crops as well as forest trees. In any case, India needs to expand its green cover to fight the increasing pollution levels. A self-reliant nation needs to be able to solve its problems on its own, through a strategic plan that connects water conservation, going green and reducing pollution levels.
As is evident, saving water and promoting greenery go hand in hand. They are both important when it comes to sustainable development, a philosophy that is at the heart of building Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
