This beautiful hill town in Lombardy, 45 minutes from Milan even has its own airport. Budget airline, Ryanair, uses the town’s small airport as a hub for European travellers headed to Milan and the Alps. But the historic town of Bergamo is also a perfect destination for a traveller curious to discover a typical hill-town. From Bergamo’s airport, a local bus takes visitors to the city in less than half an hour. The city divides into two halfs - the more modern lower city, Città Bassa, but the bus climbs on up to the beautiful, ancient upper town, Città Alta. Snowy summits of the Alps can be see from street corners all along the main Via Colleoni. A visitor can easily walk all around the upper town in a morning. At the end of Via Colleoni is one of the loveliest little piazzas in Italy: Piazza Vecchia. Its most intriguing treasures are tucked away at the far end of the square – the Duomo, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the Colleoni Chapel – all worth a visit but in particular, enter the rather bland looking Basilica where you’ll find a ceiling writhing with hundreds of white stone limbs and some of the most exuberant, almost surreal marquetry in Italy. And don’t forget to ride the funicular down to the lower town. There’s a lovely little café right in the funicular building. Have an aperitif here and take advantage of the northern Italian tradition of serving lots of tasty snacks, mini pizzas, sausages, olives etc for the price of a drink. And all the while you can enjoy the fabulous views from the café terrace.
