Given :- Consider each alphabet takes only one number from 0 to 9 uniquely. OLD + OLD + OLD = GOOD, then what is the value of G+O+O+D ?

A) 7

B) 12

C) 9

D) 6

Solution :-

O L D

O L D

O L D

+ GOOD

we can see that,

  • 3 same three digits number = four digit number .
  • Then G = 1 (Carry .)

now, checking unit digit ,D + D + D = D . Possible values,

  • 0 + 0 + 0 = 0 = Same
  • 1 + 1 + 1 = 3
  • 2 + 2 + 2 = 6
  • 3 + 3 + 3 = 9
  • 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
  • 5 + 5 + 5 = 15 = Same
  • 6 + 6 + 6 = 18
  • 7 + 7 + 7 = 21
  • 8 + 8 + 8 = 24
  • 9 + 9 + 9 = 27

taking D = 0,

O L 0

O L 0

O L 0

+ GOO0

now, since O and L both gives a carry number ,

  • O possible values = 4, 5 and 6 { since rest give carry 2. }
  • L possible values = 4,5,6,7,8 or 9 .
  • But we can take same value .

then, if O = 4 , => L = 7, 8 or 9

  • if L = 7 => 7 * 3 = 21 ≠ O
  • if L = 8 => 8 * 3 = 24 = unit digit = O
  • if L = 9 => 9 * 3 = 27 ≠ O

checking , if L = 8

  • 8 * 3 = 24 => Carry 2 .
  • then, 3 * 4 = 12 + 2 = 14 = unit digit also O .

therefore, we can conclude that,

  • L = 8
  • O = 4
  • D = 0
  • G = 1

putting values we get,,

4 8 0

4 8 0

4 8 0

+ 1440

hence,

→ G+O+O+D = 1 + 4 + 4 + 0 = 9 (C) (Ans.)

OLD + OLD + OLD = GOOD, then the value of G+O+O+D = 9

Given:

Consider each alphabet takes only one number from 0 to 9 uniquely.

OLD + OLD + OLD = GOOD, then what is the value of G+O+O+D?

1) 7

2) 12

3) 9

4) 6

Solution:

OLD + OLD + OLD = GOOD

We can say OLD^3 = GOOD(Four digit number)

Hence, G = 1

Taking D=0 as it gives the same unit digit when we add 0 thrice.

Now, finding the values of O and L:

Since Alphabet O gives the carry over 1.

O possible ways are :

4 + 4 + 4 = 12

5 + 5 + 5 = 15

6 + 6 + 6 = 18

So, we can take O = 4, 5, or 6

By taking O value 4, checking L possible ways are :

4 x 3 = 12

5 x 3 = 15

6 x 3 = 18

7 x 3 = 21

8 x 3 = 24 (Unit digit of 24 is equals to the value of O)

Taking O = 4, L = 8, D = 0 and G = 1

Substitute the values and add:

OLD + OLD + OLD = GOOD

480 + 480 + 480 = 1440

The value of G+O+O+D = 1 + 4 + 4 + 0 = 9
