Angelou had a lot of life experience, which might have contributed to this poem. By reading this poem, you can tell that she wanted to let people know that sticks and stones might break her bones but words will never hurt her. Angelou also wanted to be the voice of African American people and that they would follow her and fight with her to make things right.

In the poem it says ‘ still like dirt I rise’. This is saying that she will rise above it all. She wont listen to the bad things people have to say and will stay true to her self.
