Consider the diagram of the basic structure of a bacterium.
A diagram of a bacterium is labeled. Part A is the cell membrane, part B is the flagellum, part C is the nucleoid, and part D is the pilus.
Which of the labeled structures in the image allows bacteria to exchange genetic material and thus evolve to be better pathogens?

The structure responsible for exchange of genetic material in bacteria is structure D -  Pilus.

To know about the DNA exchange mechanism in bacteria, we first need to understand the basic structures present in it.

  1. Cell membrane - It consists of a lipid bilayer and is semipermeable in nature. Its main function involves regulation of passage of materials in and out of the cell.
  2. Flagellum - It is a filamentous organelle and is mainly involved in the locomotion of cell.
  3. Nucleoid - It is the region in the cytoplasm that contains all the genetic material. the genetic material includes genomic DNA, RNA and proteins.
  4. Pili - It is hair like appendage present on the surface of bacteria. They help in cell to cell attachment during the process of DNA transfer in bacteria which is termed as conjugation. And are thus responsible for exchange of genetic material in bacterial cell.

Conjugation facilitate gene transfer and thus recombination in the bacterial cell.
