Consider the enlargement of the parallelogram. A smaller parallelogram with side lengths one-third foot and x feet. A larger parallelogram with side lengths 8 feet and 6 feet. Set up a proportion to solve for the missing measure of the original parallelogram. Which side of the original parallelogram corresponds to the 6 ft side of the enlarged parallelogram? What is the second step in solving the proportion? What is the value of the missing measure?

Given :  enlargement of the parallelogram. A smaller parallelogram with side lengths one-third foot and x feet. A larger parallelogram with side lengths 8 feet and 6 feet.

To Find :

Which side of the original parallelogram corresponds to

the 6 ft side of the enlarged parallelogram?

A. x ft

B. 1/3 ft

C. 8 ft

D. 6ft

What is the second step in solving the proportion?

A. Add the ratios.

B. Subtract the ratios.

C. Cross multiply.

D. Cross divide.

What is the value of the missing measure?

A. 1/4

B. 1/2

C. 4

D. 16

Solution:

x ft   in original parallelogram  corresponds to  the 6 ft side of the enlarged parallelogram

Cross multiply   is the second step in solving the proportion

(1/3)/8  = x/6

=> 1/24 = x/6

=> 6/24 = x

=> 1/4 = x

=> x = 1/4 ft

missing measure of the original parallelogram.  = 1/4 ft

value of the missing measure = 1/4
