Consider the situation shown in the figure. What are the signs of q1 and q2? If the lines are drawn in proportion to the charges, what is the ratio q1/q2?

Given :

Number of lines passing through q₁ = 3

Number of lines passing through q₂ = 3

To Find :

The signs of q₁ and q₂

The value of the ratio q₁/q₂

Solution :

  • The electric field lines of force are entering the charge q₁, so the sign of the charge q₁ is negative.
  • The electric field lines of force are leaving the charge q₂ , so the sign of the charge q₁ is positive.
  • As the lines are drawn proportional to the charges

                    \frac{q_{1} }{q_{2} } = \frac{6}{18} =\frac{1}{3}

The sign of q₁ is negative and the sign of q₂ is positive

The value of the ratio  q₁/q₂ is 1:3
