One important theme is perseverance. The story highlights the importance of never giving up. The conflict behind this theme is evident from the way that Clay struggles against nature in the climb up the mountain. Clay's effort pays off when he successfully reaches his destination and discovers even more firewood than he thought would be there: "Reaching upward the distance of a step, he brushed away the snow, and in the frozen gravel and crumbled rock of the slide chopped a shallow resting place for his foot. Then he came up a step, reached forward, and repeated the maneuver. And so, step by step, foothole by foothole, a tiny speck of toiling life poised like a fly on the face of Moosehide Mountain, he fought his upward way."
