The constitutional status of local government has helped to strengthen democracy in our country. It also increased women's representation and role in our democracy. Elections are held regularly here but Gram Sabhas not held regularly. Most state governments have not transferred significant powers to the local government and have not given adequate resources to them. Thus, we have still not achieved the ideal of self-government.
