  • A balance beam is an instrument that helps in comparing the weights of two objects.
  • It works by matching the weight of the object to be weighed against a standard/ known weight.
  • When equal weights are added to the paper cups, the net torque on the hanger is balanced and it remains straight.
  • If the weight in one cup is more than the other cup, the hanger will tilt to the side of the heavier cup.
