didnt want to answer this question but after seeing many people are blessed to have something to eat like cheese , veggies etc . Ok ! Let me come to my answer.
Its not me but my mother. My mother and her family was very poor. They were 8 children and parents. Her father didnt take care of his family. My mother and her brother worked in shoe manufacturing shop and milk booth for very less salary. Others were going to school.
At night my granny used to cook rice and tamarind water seasoned with mustard and chilli powder( we call it puli kulambu, she wont cook in morning or afternoon because nothing was there to cook). Kids had it first so most of the time my mother and granny didnt get anything to eat. If rice was left over they pour water in the cooked rice overnight and next day they had it with buttermilk and shallots. Again my mother would not eat at morning because it wont be enough for all. They gave 2 tea in her shop. She spent more than 6 years like this. After getting married to my father she invited all her sisters and brothers to our house to have food everyday or gave money. My father was running famous coffee shop and takeaway in another city.
My granny used to make this tamarind water when ever we visited her for holidays. My mother too used to cook this occasionally. Actually we enjoyed it. My mother and sibilings still love to eat this rice with water and buttermilk. But it has more health benefits. Also my granny made ragi millet porridge on month ends. It was very very cheaper grain you get those days but very healthy for bones. Now doctors are prescribing this grain to have it as breakfast to rich patients.
My mother taught us how horrible to stay with an empty stomach. I think most of the people who suffered being poor understand the pain that too if your kids are hungry. I always give food to my maid before she starts working and to her kids when she goes home.
Search palayasoru( old rice) in Google. Many south indian farmers are still eating this as breakfast.
