Ethene on treatment with bromine undergoes addition to form 1,2-Dibromoethane (ethylene dibromide), which on heating with excess alcoholic potash (KOH) yields ethyne.

CH2=CH2 + Br2 = CH2BrCH2Br

CH2BrCH2Br + 2KOH (alcoholic) = C2H2 (ethyne) + 2KBr + 2H2O

Ethylene dibromide undergoes successive dehydrohalogenation to give ethyne.
