Imphal, February 26: The northeastern state of Manipur is going to polls on March 4, and March 8, 2017, in two phases. The term of the current Legislative Assembly expires on March 18, 2017. In 2012, the last Assembly elections were held in which Congress has won 42 seats and Okram Ibobi Singh was re-elected as the Chief Minister. Two years after forming the government, the Manipur State Congress Party and its five sitting MLAs also joined the ruling Congress, taking the Congress tally in the Assembly to 47.
This is a tough time for Manipur as the state is witnessing economic blockade by the United Naga Council (UNC). A recent decision taken by the government to create seven new districts in the state had stirred the resistance and the UNC has gone against the decision by protesting with a blockade which has paralysed the state for more than three months now.
