Answer:

x = 10 and y = 5

Step-by-step explanation:

Elizabeth bought two types of pen $3 and $5. Total cost of pens was $55. She had total number of 15 pen. Find number of each type of pen.

Let x number of pen Type 1 which cost $3 each

Let y number of pen Type 2 which cost $5 each

Total number of pen = 15

Therefore, x + y = 15------------(1)

Cost of x number of pen = 3x

Cost of y number of pen = 5y

Total cost of pen = $55

Therefore, 3x + 5y = 55-------(2)

Using elimination method to solve for x and y

Multiply first equation by -3 to elimination.

-3x - 3y = -45

 3x + 5y = 55

         2y = 10

           y = 5

Put y = 5 in equation (10

x + 5 = 15

So, x = 10

Number of Type 1 pen = 10

Number of Type 2 pen = 5
