Once upon a time, there was a village that was plagued by rats. The rats came in all sizes, but were all equally troublesome. Even the smallest one had sharp teeth that would effortlessly eat up the villagers' food grains. The rats enjoyed their daily feast while the villagers suffered in misery. Soon word of the rat problem spread and people from other villages began giving advice, but nothing worked.
One day a young man came to the village sarpanch and told him that he could get rid of the rats. The man carried just a flute with him, but the desperate sarpanch was willing to try anything. He promised to reward the young piper with lots of gold and silver.
The piper got to work. He played a melodious tune on his flute. The notes magically drove the rats towards the man. As he walked away from the village, hundreds of rats followed him. He took the rats far from the village. The man had indeed solved the problem!
When he went to the sarpanch, the village head made excuses and eventually went back on his words. The piper did not get the promised reward. He was annoyed with the sarpanch's selfishness. Without uttering another word, he decided to leave the village. He played a captivating melody on his flute. This time children came out of their homes and started following the piper. He walked away from the village and that was the last time that the children were ever seen.
