Both chemicals are ionic compounds and soluble in water. When they mix, however, magnesium carbonate is formed which, although still an ionic compound, is insoluble in water and will be precipitated as a white solid. That will leave sodium chloride in solution.

MgCl2 (aq)+ Na2CO3 (aq) = MgCO3 (s) + 2NaCl (aq)
