The key difference between a democracy and a republic lies in the limits placed on government by the law, which has implications for minority rights. Both forms of government tend to use a representational system — i.e., citizens vote to elect politicians to represent their interests and form the government.
No hereditary position and powers to anybody in India. The government abides by constitutional checks and balances. The Constitution of India, which came into effect on 26 January 1950, states in its preamble that Indiais a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic.
Republic- Because the head of the state is an elected president and not a monarch. Hence we celebrate both the festivals on 15th August and 26th January respectively :) We celebrate republic day to commemorate the 'adoption of our Constitution' and 'declaration of being a republic nation'.
