it came in todays boards paper.
the author felt guilty for throwing his mug on the snake as his voice of education was telling him to kill the snake, but the voice of humanity wanted the snake to drink water frm the trough as it was very hot and the poet also felt honoured tht the snake came to his trough to drink water.

The snake by D.H Lawrence is a wonderful poem that reveals the general contradiction of a person. After hitting the snake he understands fault and wishes its return. As for the poet, he felt the same as Ancient Mariner who killed an Albatross and wanted it's return. The poet repents for hitting the snake which had come from the underworld like a guest to drink water at his water trough. He feels sorry for his act and tell that he had to pay for it.
