The geological continents and the shallow seabed areas near their shores, referred to as continental shelves. Some more information about continental crust:

  • They are formed by a layer of volcanic, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks known as the continental crust. Because of its bulk composition, which is richer in aluminium silicates and has a lower density than the oceanic crust, known as sima.
  • Other layer which is richer in magnesium silicate  minerals, is occasionally referred to as sial.
  • Seismic wave velocity variations have revealed that there is a rather significant contrast between the more felsic top continental crust and the more mafic lower continental crust at a particular depth (the Conrad discontinuity).
  • In the Philippine province of Bohol, there is a geological structure known as the Chocolate Hills. Over a region of more than 50 square kilometres, there are at least 1,260 hills, but there could be as many as 1,776.
  • The name comes from the green grass that covers them, which turns brown during the dry season.
