The continental shelf is the extension of landmass into the sea and then comes the continental slope and then abyssal plains. The case with the Indian subcontinent is somewhat different. The Western Ghats are escarpmentsand not just simple high relief features. Escarpments are types of mountains with one side normal and other side with steep slope( long cliff). That's why when looked from the Arabian sea side they look like mountain ranges. Whereas the landward side is extremely rich in biodiversity.
On an avg. continental shelves on the Arabian side are 640 km wide(this is quite high from normal).
