Explanation:

Answer: Continued self-pollination result in inbreeding depression. So flowering plants have developed following devices to discourage self-pollination and to encourage cross pollination: (i) Dicliny (unisexuality): Flowers are unisexual so that self-pollination is not possible.

OUTBREEDING DEVICES

  1. Dicliny(unisexsexuality)- presence of unisexual flower and hence self-pollination does not occurs .
  2. Dichogamy - in many plants pollen release and stigma receptivity are not synchronised either Pollen is released before the Sigma become receptive or stigma becomes receptive much more before the release of pollen.
  3. Herkogmay - in some plants morphological barriers are found between the anther and the stigma of the same flower so that self pollination cannot occur IE. the anther and stigma place distantly
  4. Self Incompatibility - this is a genetic mechanism and prevents self pollination.
